The Deacons Board

The Deaconry provides an excellent opportunity for service within the church. Key responsibilities of these faithful and dedicated workers of the Lord include:

  • Taking care of the church appearance and church properties;
  • Ensuring that the atmosphere in which the services of the church are conducted are conducive and clean for the comfort of worshipers;
  • Nurturing the church family comfort of the worshipers; and

Male deacons are ordained to this service by the laying on of hands. It is primarily a spiritual service, a calling for spiritual qualifications very similar to those of the pastor and the elders. This implies much more than taking up of the offering, maintaining the building and grounds and occasionally distributing food to the poor.  Women of the church elected to serve as deaconesses are also called to a very sacred and important responsibility as well. In their work, they are brought very close to the church membership, being especially helpful in times of sickness and need.

Deacons and deaconesses are expected to exhibit love and grace. They must “be grave, not slanderous, sober, faithful in all things” - 1 Timothy 3:11. The deacons' and deaconesses' work requires a deep respect for and rapport with the Pastor, the Elders and with each other.  The responsibilities of this office are awesome, but with these responsibilities comes the assurance that God will provide the divine energy needed to accomplish the task. Therefore, deacons and deaconesses are called to be steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as they know that their  labour is not in vain in the lord - 1 Cor. 15:58.
